3 Genuine Reasons to Forgive Your Parents.
For when you are ready to make peace with your mind.
It took me almost 30 years to accept that our parents are humans just like us and it’s their first time in this world too.
Admitting the simple fact above and putting my ego aside have lifted up so much weight off of my shoulders. I have so much more compassion for them and I am extremely proud of their 60+ years of accomplishments.Â
Three years ago, I wouldn’t imagine writing this article and I hope that I can help you move pass their pain by planting these seeds in your head.Â
My parents got divorced when I was 3 year-old so I have no memory of them being together. Without getting too much into the weeds of things, my dad went to remarry another woman and my mother devoted her entire life to us and her career. She never remarried.Â
I blamed my dad for not making us a priority in his life, choosing to raise another woman’s kids, missing many pick ups, birthdays and frankly never really paying much attention to us, unless when it benefitted him.Â
I blamed my mother for constantly reminding us of our father’s mistakes and telling us their divorce stories. I don’t think I was mentally or emotionally ready to process that as a teenager because I will carry that away with me forever.
So how to get over that blame and pain? How do you stop judging them and finally accept them for who they are today?Â
I think there is a series of small steps you need to take to rewire your mind and really get over all of the childhood trauma you’ve had. I am not a neuroscientist obviously but I can speak from my experience.Â
Disclaimer: Some traumas are obviously deeper than others and we need to learn from past experiences so we can protect our hearts. I want to make it clear that this is a list of things I did to make myself feel better while protecting my heart and I hope you can take something away from it.Â
